CAMINHOS DE LIBERDADE: RASTROS DA FUGA DE ESCRAVOS NOS JORNAIS DO MARANHÃO OITOCENTISTA

O artigo investiga as fugas de escravos na província do Maranhão, durante o século XIX. A base da pesquisa empírica é os anúncios publicados nos jornais que circulavam na província maranhense. O objetivo principal é compreender como as fugas configuram formas de resistência no regime escravista. A pesquisa adota uma abordagem qualitativa, fundamentada na análise documental e historiográfica, considerando o discurso dos senhores e os detalhes descritos nos anúncios de fugas. Os resultados evidenciam que as fugas não foram atos isolados, mas práticas recorrentes, articuladas por meio de redes de solidariedade, conhecimento geográfico e estratégias de dissimulação. Os dados também revelam a percepção senhorial sobre os fugitivos, marcada por estigmas, vigilância e tentativas de controle. Conclui-se que os escravos, ao fugir, não apenas negavam a condição imposta pela escravidão, mas também afirmavam sua humanidade, sua autonomia e o desejo por liberdade. A análise dos anúncios permite, portanto, resgatar dimensões ocultas da experiência escrava e valorizar as múltiplas formas de resistência negra.
